La siderurgia Altos Hornos de Vizcaya vertió al mar casi 30 millones de toneladas de residuos entre 1902 y 1966. En su mayor parte se consolidaron en la plataforma marina, pero una fracción significativa fue arrastrada al litoral por corrientes de oleaje, donde fue rápidamente cementada. Las playas resultantes tienen dos partes principales, la inferior conglomerática y fuertemente cementada, la superior dominantemente arenosa y débilmente cementada.
